Hi All,
I am tinkering with knoppmyth using an old PIII-800 i had laying around in the hopes of learning how to configure and tweak the settings to suit my Plasma TV and eventually buying some decent hardware to make a PVR.
The problem is i have no idea where to start, after searching forums and how to guides i am still none the wiser except for the fact that i think i need to edit the XF86config file and add the modline to get a resolution of 848x480.
This is where the newbie part comes in :D how do you edit the file? all the forums tell you to edit the file but none actually tell you how. I have gotten so far with opening Xedit from the main window thing and going through the directory structure to the XF86 Config file but when i click on the file it is read only? so i am at a loss now how to proceed.
Sorry to hassle for the most basic of things but i just need a push in the right direction (probably into the deep end) and swim from there.

Regards,
Michael

You are probably best working in command line initially. To get to the linux command term. Hit Alt+Ctrl+F1 , login with "root" and password you assinged during install. If you have ever worked with a command line OS should be pretty easy from this point on. The easiest command to edit the file is...

Code:
nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

I would suggest backing up the file before you edit it. Command to copy to a backup file

Code:
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.back

Keep in mind linux is case sensetive

Here is a good guide if you are new to linux

http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LinuxTips

I browsed the WIKI and forums for days looking for guides/posts that detailed directions I wanted to go with knoppmyth.

Thanks for the push it is all starting to make sense. (been a windows user for to long)
"Oh yea, Hit CTRL+ALT+F7 to return to MythTV". reboot did the same thing :-) your way is much quicker.

Thanks again for your help, now i have the resolution 848x480 in the XF86Config file as well as the XF86Config-4 file (wasn't sure which one to edit as some forums said one and some said the other). How do i now tell the machine to boot into this resolution? do i delete all other possible ones from the config file in the "screen section"?

Regards,
Michael

That's what I usually do: I comment out with # any modelines I might want to keep and get rid of all of the rest. Then I only have a single set of depth and mode in the "Display" subsection of the "Screen" section, for instance, Depth 24 and Modes "960x480." That way I know what I'm going to get.

Thanks again,
Michael
