I want to put the linux install on a small 6 gig drive and have the stored tv recordings on another harddrive, much bigger. I setup the recording directory to /mnt/hdb1, but i can't tell if mythbackend is running or not, if i open xterm (i know linux some but not tons, and besides i'm used to Mandrake unfourtunately) i dont know how to become root so i can change the permission on /mnt/hdb1, because if i run mythbackend from xterm it says i don't have permision or the directory doesn't exist, and when i start knoppmyth, and mythfronend starts, i go to watch live tv and it says can't connect to the backend, make sure something, didn't write it down and was last nite. I have broadcast DHCP giving the box an IP address, do i have to in the myth setup specify something specific besides the default values? probably now that i'm thinking of it, it thinks the back end is at 127.0.0.1 when it's got an ip from the DHCP server, although doesn't 127.0.0.1 mean it's self? or am i way off? appreciate any help i can get, i had myth set up with Mandrake on myown but it didn't run very well, and i don't think i'm experienced enough to figure out Debian, although if someone wants to help me i'd be more than happy to try, also i know i could ask this in MythTV but can you run both a pvr 350 and 250, i right now have a 250 but would love to get a 350 for the output and being able to record 2 shows at the same time, anyone know how fast your machine should be with hardware PVR's (250/350) to record 2 and watch 1 with the output assisted with the 350, should be able to on a relatively slow machine (althlon 650 should be plenty??)

anyways thanks for anyhelp.

Oh yea, i have the new grey remote and had issues getting it to work with LIRC, i needed the CVS version to get it to work, if i put i have a remote will KnoppMyth set it up correctly? one last think what is the NVDIA XvMC i know my STB systems card (pci unfourtunately) is an NVDIA chipset and has Xv extensions, but i don't know what MC is. thanks

Well if you are familiar w/ Mandrake the commands are the same w/ KnoppMyth. You 'su' to get to root. I'd suggest doing a manual install. Have you read the instructions? In addition, I'd suggest reading the MythTV docs. STB hasn't produced a nVidia based card in years, odds are you don't have XVMC(GeForce 4 and above).

yea i figured the SU out, um i know it was made in 1998, just have XV i guess, but i did need to install the drivers from NVIDIA otherwise playback was choppy. My problems now are this:

one mythbackend doesn't start for somereason, i have to open xterm and start it manually, then mythfront end.

Second, i can watch live tv and it's great, but it locks up when i try to change the channel, any suggestions?

I have read the MythTV docs, i can do most of that pretty well. Did you mean Debian? yea i'm thinking about doing that, but from what i've read it's kinda hard for non expert?? perhaps, i personally like manual installs, and compiling stuff myself, i find things run better that way, i would love to get MythTV functioning fully, but can't on Mandrake very well, i mean it works but recordings or tv play stop after so long, just locks up the system, i'm thinking Debian would be better hopefully, i might mess around with it when i get more time, would love to get KnoppMyth working though.

Well, have you checked the log?/var/log/mythtv
Have tuner are you using? You may have to specify the card and tuner type. A browse of the forum will show you how to do this... I meant KnoppMyth docs. You can always remove debs and install mythtv from source...
