I know there are several of you here that aside from running your Knoppmyth backend have an XBox front end somewhere else. To you all I pose this question: which remote control do you use to control MythTV? Do you have a different IR receiver?

I'm running Xebian with a mythfrontend, and everything works (not perfectly yet, but getting there). The remote control and DVD dongle (clones, not MS original) work perfectly fine with LIRC, and as far as anyone knows they're not clones.

The problem is, though, the original control only has the basics -- theren't aren't nearly enough keys to do what I want! Mapping to LIRC is no big deal, but any time I try any other control with LIRC's irrecord, only the original remote works. Even my RCA DVD won't work, although it's a ca. 1999 version so maybe the signalling protocol is different.

So... here's what I think the options are:
  • A modern RCA DVD remote (or universal programmed as such) will work to replace the MS remote. In addition, it has extra keys that flawlessly get picked up by LIRC that I can program to any MythTV function that I choose. Is this a correct analysis?
  • I need something besides the Microsoft dongle to receive IR, because the MS dongle only sends IR codes for the 20 keys an IR remote has.
  • You all live with the reduced functionality of only the few buttons you have.

So what have y'all done?

I have about the same setup with my XBox. My advice is to just break down and buy a MS remote. They are only about $30 at Walmart.

Yeah, but the XBox remote is spartan to say the least. It only provides the most basic of buttons, not nearly enough to control MythTV. How do you swap tuners without a keyboard? (Actually, why do I have to swap tuners anyway? Shouldn't it be automatic as I flip through channels?)

I just picked up a Harmony remote thinking that it'd do everything... but for some reason it's not working either. Off to do more troubleshooting...

I am using a 659 Harmony Remote for my Xbox. I use my customized Xbox remote lirc config file though. I can send you my lirc remote config file if you want. Just pm me your email and I will send it.

I would also suggest using this forum for xbox specific issues. The people friendly and usually quite helpful.

Good link. As much googling I've been doing lately, I'm suprised I've not come up there.

The 659 is the very control I bought yesterday -- it was on sale for 40% off at CompUSA.

And... it turns out that my RCA DVD remote works just fine with an authentic Microsoft DVD dongle. The problem the whole, entire time was that the copy wasn't just a normal, 100% duplication like the Chinese do, but something totally, wickedly incompatible. So... $30 instead of $10 for the IR. I guess I can put 'em on eBay now...
