After upgrading to R5V16 I have a strange problem that I haven't been able to track down. After many searches I've decided to post this note in hopes that someone can at least point me in the right direction.
Bascially now any new DVD rip I do (exactly as I've always done), when played via mplayer, I either get the Spanish audio or the directors commentary. All of my previous rips play just fine via mplayer. If I use Xine then it plays just fine (English). I've added various switches to the mplayer command line to make it default to the English audio but the results are the same.
I'm tempted to upgrade and recompile mplayer based on a post here (which would allow me to select the audio track and suipport more codecs) but I'm not sure that the issue is on playback but maybe more on the burn process?
Let's just say teaching my daughter to launch Xine isn't really an option just yet (never mind the wife).

I had the same problem with some DVD imports (approx 20%). For me the problem would only happen when importing with PERFECT quality. Importing in Excellent, or below quality would work fine. I have been importing in excellent quality which I have configured to do Xvid encoding and has been working fine. However Perfect quality is much faster 15 min compared to 2.5 hours.
I reseached in the gossamer threads a bit and another solution is to create a .conf file in /home/mythtv/.mplayer
Below is a sample file.
Code: # config file /home/mythtv/.mplayer/rippedmovie.vob.conf aid=128 After adding .conf file worked fine. I recall reading problem had to do with perfect quality recording all audio tracks and mplayer not choosing correct track.[/code]

It's a good workaround until they can fix the regression in MythDVD or its support code. spalVl wrote: Code: # config file /home/mythtv/.mplayer/rippedmovie.vob.conf aid=128
That seems to work so far, but I need to test it some more on some foreign-language DVDs. The fact that the Perfect rip includes multiple audio tracks is still a problem. File size aside, the program is not making use of the user's instructions to pick the right audio track.

I tested enough DVDs now that I see a pattern. The mplayer configuration workaround basically tells mplayer to pick the primary audio track, which seems to correspond with the first one in the list in the MythDVD rip menu. This is not always the language you want.

I backup some of my movies using the perfect option. In a few cases, I have had the wrong language played back, even though English was selected on the ripping menu.
I'm currently running R5A22. Adding the file rippedmovies.vob.conf did not work for me. However, when I added the line "aid=128" to the preexisting file /home/mythtv/.mplayer/config, the "offending" movie played in the correct language.
I have not yet tried to see what would happen if I backed up the movie using the excellent or lower quality settings.

This only works when the "correct" language is the DVD's primary language. That's what 128 selects.

Did you recompile mplayer or change mplayer? Mplayer is setup by default to use the %FILENAME%.conf if exists. I use .conf files all the time to change aspect ratio. I did however update my Mplayer to pre7, but I am pretty sure I tested the .conf files with R5A26 out of the box.
Are your .conf files the exact case as "YoUrMovie.vob" ? If not won't work linux is case sensistive.
Do your movies contain any space ? Not sure how mplayer would handle "My Movie.vob"

After many distractions (of the four letter word kind - " work") and another KnoppMyth related adventure (wireless nic - now resolved ) I was finally able to try your suggestion (SpalVl) and it's working fine!
Was like another XMas present for my daughter!
Many thanks to everyone!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

This bug is also present in R5A30. I'll try the workaround and post back.

After converting some VOB's to AVI's in order to save space, I realized they would now play without any sound. Then checked some existing files I had in AVI format and they too played silently. Removed the /.mplayer/config file with the aid=128 and they played fine. So I then created /.mplayer/FILENAME.avi.conf with "aid=1" (setting is from the mplayer man page) and this worked. So I was able to put the generic /.mplayer/config back so VOB's play correclty and create additional /.mplayer/FiLename.avi.conf files to match the AVI's I have and we are happy once again!
(Accept for one AVI that plays fine in xine but freezes on launch in mplayer - have to kill frontend to release - though it has played fine before? I'll probably just rip it again to resolve but it is strange...?)
