Got my backend all up and working great , now the woman wants one in the living room so its time to build a front end as cheap as possible, here is what i'm working with:
Backend :
AMD 1Ghz 256 RAM
GeForce 4000 MX w/ TV=out
R30.1 Knoppmyth
PVR - 150 w/ Silver Remote

Front End (So Far):
PII 433 Board

How much RAM should i get for the front end? i will probaly just buy another GeForce mx 4000 (26 $) but the main problem (assuming it will be smooth with only 433mhz ) is the remote, i dont want to spend the money on another tuner so is there a USB remote that works out of the box with Knoppmyth? Thanks

You have the CPUs backwards. With a PVR card doing hardware based MPEG-2 encoding, recording is a trivial job only requiring shuffling data to disk. Decoding for playback is where you need the CPU power.

the 1ghz is actually a front and a backend , i have it in my "guy" room so the woman doesn't mind it being big and ugly :)

will 433 work for front?

I doubt the performance of a 433 will be acceptable but you can try it ( I have a front end on an 800 mhz and it is barely acceptable). If the machine has a serial port you can build (or buy) a serial IR receiver. See http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LIRCHowTo
