I downloaded the file and got it all loaded folowing the steps given but then x starts and the screen is jumbled like there is a refresh problem. Is there a way to fix this?

You need to fix your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 config file. There is a lot of information about how to do that here and on the wiki, including a full sample for a FX5200 or similar card.

Has anybody noticed and/or tried the new 8178 driver yet?

yeah I saw the updated version, but it's just a bug fix release, and none of the bugs seemed relevant to me so I haven't messed with it.

I'm having the same problem, but I'm using the same Mobo that cesman recommends, when he first mentions a reference platform. So how did I suddenly get outside the main path and get the (#*(*$* I cannot star the X server.... ?

The extended text is:
GDM: Xserver not found: /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7
Error: Command could not be executed!
Please install the x server or edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to point to the right place.

Very annoying... I'll go look for the nvida drivers and try to ssh scp the file to the proper place.

Oh well, I'm going to try and burn the disk one last time with new cd stock. Maybe that will help...

yes that sounds exactly like a bad burn error. It's stating the X server doesn't even exist, and I can assure you it does exist in a good install of knoppmyth.

I installed this a week ago and it seams to be working pretty well. XVMC seams to be working but I get some strange artifacts on the screen from time to time. The OSD is also black and white (instead of color when xvMC is enabled) and flickers whenever it comes up. I have had the machine lock up when xvMC is enabled when I fast forward and stop or rewind too fast, but I think this may be due to something else. I am currently using an Nvidia Geforce4 4000 (mx440) but I'm ready to switch a Geforce 6600 GT into the Myth box. I'll probably do that this weekend when I upgrade from a26 to a30.2

all the issues you mentioned are known issues with xvmc. The lockups by most accounts are mostly gone, so that may have to do with something else, but the other two are just things you have to deal with at this point in time in order to get the hardware acceleration of xvmc.

I defininately agree, it's something else. The drivers are working well though. One interesting thing is if I enable xvMC and then turn it off I can watch certain HD channels as if I had it enabled. If I restart the machine for some reason and try to watch those same channels without enable/disabling things I cannot watch the channels.

I'm still going to rebuild and switch out the video cards this weekend (I'm thinking I'll just do a full and complete clean install) with 30.2. I'll upgrade the the new nvidia driver again and post how things went (probably sunday some time).

Thanks again guys.

I saw on nVidia website that they provide an utility "nvidia-xconfig" (which is a commandline tool for updating X configuration files.).

Do you think it can work with the default nvidia driver used by KnoppMyth during installation?

Is this tool useful? Do I need to update the driver even if my TV is not HDTV?

That tool is actually built when the drivers are, it just gets tossed by the cleanup. I did a little magic at one time and tested it but was not terribly impressed with the results. It tries to hide the syntax of the XF86Config-4 file (which is the easy part) from you, without actually making the actual configuration parts much easier.

To experiment with it, you can try editing the generated script and make the following change (THIS IS A CRUDE HACK!):
Code:
root@black2:/usr/local/bin# diff install-nvidia-8178-debian.sh~ install-nvidia-8178-debian.sh
97,98c97,98
< rm -rf NVIDIA-Linux-x86-$VER-pkg1
< rm -f /etc/modutils/nvidia
---
> #rm -rf NVIDIA-Linux-x86-$VER-pkg1
> #rm -f /etc/modutils/nvidia

Then rerun that script.

Not noticably. For some people it also seems to chew a lot of CPU.

It's mainly important for the folks whose video cards or motherboards aren't supported by previous versions, or folks trying to do 1080i.

Define better. I've had no issue w/ earlier versions of the driver and a "standard TV".
