I have samba running on my knoppmyth box. I can access the linux shares from my Windows XP box. I have setup some shares on my XP box, but I cannot see them from my knoppmyth box. Here are the settings on both machines:

Knoppmyth box:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:11:09:90:C6:44
inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::211:9ff:fe90:c644/64 Scope:Link

RX packets:46382 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

RX bytes:31637651 (30.1 MiB) TX bytes:6085060 (5.8 MiB)
Interrupt:19 Base address:0xa000

XP box:

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

When I try "smbclient -L 192.168.1.2", I get the following:

timeout connecting to 192.168.1.2:445
timeout connecting to 192.168.1.2:139
Error connecting to 192.168.1.2 (Operation already in progress)

Any ideas on what I can do?

Check the firewall settings on XP, by default with SP2 port 139 (netBIOS) is blocked and as you can see from your logs that is one of the ports that you are trying to talk too.

Other software firewalls could also be interferring. Disable them and then try your connection.

I disabled the XP firewall and saw no change. I have the file and print sharing exception option enabled. This should allow connections on ports 139, 445, 137, and 138. The scope is limited to the subnet, but my knoppmyth and XP boxes are on the same subnet.

Just a little more info, the boxes are attached to a Netgear wireless router. The XP is directly attached. The knoppmyth box is wireless using a Linksys Wireless game adapter. I didn't feel like trying to get a wireless NIC card to work in linux.

I forgot that the nVidia on the board NIC card on my XP box has a firewall. Disabling that worked.

Thanks.
