I am trying to learn more about how the system is put together, and one thing I can't find is where, on a normal install, the mythfrontend process gets started.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

If you look at the /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps document you'll see something there called KnoppMyth-run. I think that script starts up mythfrontend if all the installation steps are completed and it doesn't detect any changes in the installation. I hope that's right and that's what you were referring to.
