From the MythTV WIKI:

Quote:
Issues and Problems: As of lirc-0.8, both the older and newer remotes are supported, although the IR blaster is not supported.

Is this information current? I'm running MCE 2005 and was hoping to replace it with Myth this weekend. I don't see the point if the MS IR blaster doesn't work. I'll need to wait until I obtain different equipment.

Thanks,

Jeff

Are you using the ir blaster to control another device?

Or just using the MCE and usb IR receiver?

I'm using the MCE remote and USB reciever under 30.2 and it works quite well after a little tweak, but I just have regular cable so I'm not trying to control any other devices with IR out from the Knoppmyth box.

Yes, the MS IR Blaster controls my Cox digital cable box.

My current setup:

Hauppage PVR-500MCE
MS Remote/IR Blaster
MCE 2005/R2

Which sucks :)

Just today, I'm getting stacking error windows regarding the MCE ehome service. 300+ error windows before I shut down the service.I mainly use this box to view my DVD collection, converted to DivX. TV is a great plus.

I can't wait to blow Windows MCE off.

I would like to start off with a warning that I don't control any external devices with me USB IR receiver--so your mileage may vary. I'm also on 30.2 so I don't know much about R5B7--which may be a different set of issues to solve.

As far as RA30 goes Here's a quick summary of my experience setting it up.

After installing Knoppmyth and choosing the MCEUSB for the remote, I found that initially, the remote wasn't working. Finding a lot of info about compiling lirc and etc... on this site and others, I went to try it and found the tweak reference below. I figured that I might as well try the easy one first and it ended up working.

Now, for the tweaking I mentioned earlier:
cp /usr/local/share/knoppmyth/remotes/mceusb2/etc/lircd.conf /etc/lircd.conf
cp /usr/local/share/knoppmyth/remotes/mceusb2/etc/lircrc /home/mythtv/.mythtv/
I also had to change /etc/init.d/lirc
from:
start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/sbin/lircd -- $LIRCD_ARGS \
to:
start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/sbin/lircd \

I rebooted and all was well. As far as the IRBlaster, I found some reports of success and some that listed a few things people had done to solve things. Check out these threads:

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... +irblaster

If all else fails, post questions. :)

Thanks, Loooky, worked like a charm! I, too, haven't messed with the IR blaster yet - I just wanted to get basic functionality working first.

So, I'm a noob, both to building my own pvr and linux - is there a way to speed up the response time of the remote? It feels sluggish.

Thanks, and this site is great - so much to learn!

No luck for me as yet.

It looks like the IR Blaster for this device probably won't ever work. From the driver source:

Quote:
The first revision of this driver only supports the receive function - the transmit function will be much more tricky due to the nature of the hardware. Microsoft chose to build this device inexpensively, therefore making it extra dumb.

From what I can glean from the mailing list archives, there's no active development being done on this driver due to cost. So, I ordered an Actisys IR-200L.

As far as the transmit function, I've installed lirc with the lirc_mceusb2 and lirc_dev modules loaded, and the light on the reciever flashes when buttons are pressed, but Myth doesn't respond, despite the tweaks.
