Uh oh, I meant the other way: copy DVD to Harddisk, sorry.

that is already included in knoppmyth. It just won't rip encrypted dvd's out of the box and that is for legal reasons, but if you search the forum you will find hints. And I'll give you one more it is just one command to get it working.

Obviously not many people want to spell this out because of the DMCA and legal restrictions. those of us in the USA could really get hastled for it.

Okay, I'll look for it. 8)

Of course, you're right! And I NEVER want to make any trouble to anyone (and I love my job, too 8) )!
In germany it is (still) allowed to make a private copy but that's not why I want it: A friend of mine is making movies, trailer etc.; some just for fun, some other for his job. Sometimes he wants to hear an echo about his films and so I stay with friends and look, tell him later what he should change and so on. It would be easier to copy his DVD to my harddisk so he can give it in time to his firm / customer / studio.

Well if this is a DVD burned by an individual it will not be encrypted, and you just need to go the the video disks section go to dvd and go to rip.

You should be able to rip DVD created without encryption without making any modifications to the default install.

I'd really like to see DVB support built into the R5 release.

Guys - need to be extremely careful here. There are SERIOUS legal issues surrounding DVD decoding in Linux. The Debian DVD library does not distribute the key pieces, instead includes a simple wget script for the end customer to complete the installation.

I think the library is: libdvdread2-dev

Include the mythlink.sh script to create human readable titles to recorded programs.

Perhaps setting up weblink via Apache and File Sharing Links via Samba to this directory automatically?

Search for mythlink.sh on Myth User List

I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R5.

Support for MiniMyth, the program that makes an Epia system into a network-booted MythTV frontend. The Knoppmyth box would become the server for these frontends.

I think the addition of feature/program C would be beneficial because:

I would love to get frontends going easily and MiniMyth looks like it could use the KnoppMyth ease of install/use treatment.

KnoppMyth DOES NOT included the ability to decode encrypted DVDs.

Would it be possible to add USB Keyboard support? Or is this currently available.

For the processes started (MythWeb) by default, I would like to see some default security settings. For Apache, .htaccess is sufficient. It's controls could be set on user and/or IP address. Most people would not like their recording choices changed by strangers who peeked at their port 80.
The user should be propted to allow web access with checkboxes:
* For just this machine 192.168.1.6
* For the local ethernet, 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.255 255.255.255.0 (read from ifconfig)
O An additional address block ipaddresses/netmask (think office vs home)
O The entire internet with a correct password
O The entire internet (bad idea) without password

The same should be done for ssh/sunrpc/mysql. Ssh is the only protocol I would think of opening to the world by default.

Sorry, at best .htacess may happen. You SHOULD NOT depend on anyone to secure your box for you. This is something you should do yourself. Your box should be behind a firewall(or set it up as such). By default MySQL doesn't listen for network connections.

Ohh. Does that sound like Microsoft. I will argue that half of the people using this disk are "linux newbies". They are looking for a "if I assemble these parts, and install this CD, I have a home built, supersized TIVO." That half of the population will not know how to setup a unix box as a firewall. Their cable modem might have firewalling in it, it might not. Never assume somthing else will deal with security. That assumption was made by Microsoft with SMB ports.
I myself am a FreeBSD geek. I have not used linux since 1.2.13. Where is ifpw or the current linux firewalling software? A quick locate did not turn up anything.
If security is not in the base installation, it will not be used by half the population. What percentage of windows users do not use Windows Update to keep their systems current? The number is scary. You are not creating a unix package for knowledgable unix geeks. You are creating a "network appliance" that Mom and Pop will use. So, please, please change your mind and add the security settings.

I've seem called a few four letter words in my day but never have I been so insulted. Does Microsoft include the source to any it's software? By default, I only start the daemons that need to be start in order to run MythTV(and ssh). If someone wants to secure KnoppMyth beyond this, document it and send me the configuration files and docs. I'd be happy to review and implement it. Does Microsoft accept any suggestion from it user community?

<-- Freebsd User as well, waiting for someone to port mythtv to it heh, ot hell, any pvr like suite would be nice.

As for my Wish list, rather then including the default haupage remote config, include the lirc configure script as part of the initial install. I am trying to use my serial pinnacle pro remote with my haupage and pinnacle cards in the same box (its better then the crappy ass black remote my pvr250 came with)
