I tried many windows versions, including mce, gbpvr, media portal etc etc etc.

Not happy with any of them, so now i'm trying mythtv via knoppmyth.

My hardware:

DNTV Live! Pro
Twinhan DVB-S Sat Ci
P4 1.9ghz
512mb ram
ATI Radeon Sapphire 9250

I've done the install process, but how on earth do i get it to 'see' these video cards, and then do a scan for channels?!

OK...not sure how much linux you know, but the straight forward answer is:

1) Exit the front end assuming its running (Esc key)
2) Open a terminal (xterm by right click on desktop) or switch to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F2)
3) run mythtv-setup from command line (Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to GUI)

Before running mythtv-setup dont forget to bring down the backend server if you're gonna add a DVB card.

Code:
/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop

and when you want to start the backend server again just type

Code:
/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start

you need to be root to start the server if I remember correctly. (?)

There are some key combinations to do this stuff:

Alt-2 (stops the backend)

Alt-S (brings up mythtv-setup)

Alt-1 (starts the backend)

Alt-M (starts the frontend)
