To call it from mythtv menu follow the instructions I posted. To run it from a terminal just change to that /myth/firefox directory and type ./firefox
It's pretty cool from the mythtv menu because you select your bookmark first and it opens it. After it is opened it runs as normal firefox on any other system.

That gives me an idea to set up firefox and a bookmark to pandora.com which is a nice flash music streaming site. I wonder if the music will automatically start like it does on my desktop?

Looks like that site uses flash, so make sure you install the flash plugin. Follow this link to install plugins. I wouldn't get too crazy, dont know which ones may hose your system. Flash and Java will be fine.

http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/faq#plugins

Java is already installed, after you start firefox the first time open a terminal, go to /home/mythtv/.mozilla and mkdir plugins. Change to this new dir and type
ln -s /usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so

For flash:
-Open a terminal
-wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/fl ... nux.tar.gz
-tar zxvf install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz
-cd to that new directory
-copy the .xpt and .so files to /home/mythtv/.mozilla/plugins dir.

Restart firefox, check with about:plugins

(Edit). The complete firefox and java/flash plugin is now on the wiki.

got it working following the wiki.

Actually stopped before adding the plugins.

I clicked on the get plugin logo for flash and it installed flash automatically.

don't really need java.

However, I was wondering how to embed firefox.

I would like to be able to use the remote to back out of this screen seemlessly like the mythbrowser.

I just needed firefox because of flash.

How can i integrate firefox more seemlessly?

Got it working by following the wiki.

Now, I thought I would do a bit of work in making it look the part.

Always Show the Tab Bar

This modification is to mimic the tab bar of the mythwebbrowser.

    1. In Edit --> Preferences, goto the "Tabs" tab and de-select "Hide the tab bar when only one site is open.

Close the Browser window on closing the last tab.

This modification is make sure that Firefox closes the browser window when you close the last tab. For some reason standard behaviour is to open a blank tab, when the last tab is closed.

    1. Install the Click2Tab extension from, http://click2tab.mozdev.org.

    2. Restart firefox.

    3. In Tools --> Extensions, edit the Click2tab preferences, switch most, if not all of the settings off. making sure that "Don't close Firefox Window when the last tab is closed" in the "Tab Close Behaviour" is de-selected.

Autohide the menu and Toolbar when in Full-Screen mode.

This modification is to ensure that the menu and toolbar are hidden when in the browser is in Full-Screen mode.

    1. Install the AutoHide extension from http://www.krickelkrackel.de/autohide/.

    2. Restart firefox.

    3. In Tools --> Extensions, edit the AutoHide preferences, making sure you at least set the "Tab Bar" to "Show Always".

    4. Now turn on Fullscreen (View --> Full Screen) and the Tool bar should disappear, leaving you with the webbrowser and the Tab.

    5. Now Exit whilst in fullscreen mode. The next time you start it should be in Full-Screen mode with the Tab Bar at the top.

N.B. On the first attempt to install an extension from a unauthorised site, it will come up with the warning box saying "To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site(unauthorised site) from installing software on your computer." To get around this, do:
    a) Hit the "Edit Options" button on the right-hand side,
    b) In the "Allowed Sites" diaglog, hit the Allow button, to allow the installation to continue
    c) Try the installation again.

Lastly, I am currently looking into getting the lirc to work, via irxevents (I think) and also look at re-mapping the firefox hot keys, to act similarly to mythbrowser.

Are any of you using firefox with viewing all output on your tv? I installed firefox but I was not able to modify the resolution/fonts so it was readable, and to date I haven't found how to enable the mouse for browsing. If someone has a solution to either of these (I did follow the wiki on changing font size) I would appreciate some guidance or a nudge in the right direction to a pertinent forum posting. I'm going to be upgrading to R5C7 tonight if that makes any difference.

Hi buckarette,

I use mozilla and the mouse works fine. Mouse can be turned off in the menus I believe and is only visable if it is over an area that is not myth. Depends on the web site you goto as how fine the fine print can be before the tv bandwidth is exceded. There is only ~4.5 mhz for video in the rf carrier, direct composite is a little better, closer to ~6 mhz I believe which equates to better detail.

Once you have the R5C7 running, maybe there can be some things that I use that you may like to use also. Mozilla being one preference as I have never had an issue with it and KnoppMyth.

Well Mike, I need a mentor like nobodies business. Although in reading through the posts, I think I have avoided most of the questions that have already been answered. But then I haven't gotten enough sleep since I started this project. If you have the time, I would love to get your suggestions on things I should implement in my setup and more importantly have someone who can give me feedback if my research is on the right track. Although we should probably start a new thread so we don't incite cesman's ire and more importantly muddy the waters for people searching the threads.

Julie,
It is not what you should but what you could. Make a list of what you think you might like and send as a pm to me.

What I do to cesman's marvelous package may not be well received by some as I do alter the purity of the pvr concept. It is a computer therefore I make it work for me as well as entertain.

Besides, you can always re-install to start fresh :)

Hi all,
I did the firefox install yesterday. It sure did hose my X install, but I fixed it thus:

copied the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to xorg.conf
apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-kbd
/etc/init.d/gdm restart

Also had to reinstall myth apps (gallery, game, dvd, music, video, web) as these were also deleted! However, no need to reinstall. Once xwindows and myth work again, you can do pretty much anything.
