Yes, I was trying to gently whack you with a clue-by-four. I said please. This time I am not going to be so gentle. I think everyone can agree that Microsoft made the mistakes of:
1) Allowing anything to connect to ports that are only for the "local lan segment". Aka 135, 137-137, 443.
2) "Oh, thats open? Well put a firewall in front of it."
3) Enough bad coding on their part to allow the buffer overflow of the month through.
You are saying:
1) same
2) same
3) MythWeb: Nobody has to exploit a bug to change my recording settings or delete my recordings. Everything is open. Screw with me as you will.
3) SunRPC, and MySQL if running seperate frontend/backend: If a bug is found, it will be exploited. Not just to get at Myth stuff, but to be used as a networked zombie box. It is not like anyone is ever going to read the logs on their VCR. There is no popup that will check to see if a newer version of software because of bug fixes. Eventually there is a public bug.
I am saying:
WTF? Lock the network reachable apps down to known addresses. Don't let server apps serve to the world. Then, if there is a bug, the machine is not listening and exploitable.

Quote:
I only start the daemons that need to be start in order to run MythTV(and ssh).
The mythweb is so open that anyone connecting to the default page of the server gets to play with your recordings. How long will it take before you get a message on this board of "My system only wants to record the Playboy channel 24 hours a day. I keep resetting it, and it keeps randomly going back. What do I do?" or "My recordings randomly disappear."

Quote:
If someone wants to secure KnoppMyth beyond this

Give me two weeks. My work load is a bit heavy.
Known things to do:
1) edit a .htaccess/httpd.conf to set address restrictions for mythweb. Check if more than mythweb running, force manual update.
2) Add a password file for mythweb for when someone is "offsite" and just needs to make a change.
3) lock mysql to local ethernet segment only. So far, I don't see a case where the frontend/backend are on different ethernet segments. If they
are, point at the config file for manual updates.
4) add 2342/6543/6544 to /etc/services so they are properly described in netstat -a.
5) sunrpc? What is this running for? I turned on ntpd, but that runs on its own published port. Add to /etc/hosts.allow as appropriate.
6) ssh can be open to all, or locked to local segment. Even ssh has public bugs. Controlled by /etc/hosts.allow if compiled correctly. I must check.
7) Anything else I have missed? Anyone? Anything that can be turned on via the remote control should be accounted for.

Does Microsoft accept any suggestion from it user community?
403 bug reports/patches out of my company since Win95 was in beta. But then, my boss is good at breaking software.
I expect you to be better than Microsoft. That is why I am fighting you on this.

I will. My schedule is tight, and I expect to be doing the bulk of the work on Thanksgiving friday. I will be writing dialog scripts for items 1-6 above. I am a tcsh/FreeBSD geek that needs to transpose my thinking into a bash/linux environment. If I am not done in two weeks (Dec 7), yell at me to get it done and turned in.

Hi,

-->I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R5.

- Support for the Via EPIA M-10000 Nehemia CPU and the CLE 266 chipset (especially MPEG-decoder support)

-->I think the addition of feature/program C would be beneficial because:

Users could profit of a very small and affordable platform with integrated mpeg-2 hardware decoding, 5.1 surround sound and tv-out up to 1024x768

-->Feature/program X can be found at(please provide a link):

-http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=295#C3 (CPU features)
-http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=325 (VGA and MPEG-decoding)

-->Program X has the following dependencies and can be found(please provide a link):

not known, probably no external dependencies

It may have made the standard myth stuff already, but the directory

/myth/games/xmame/history

should not exist. It causes issues when loading new roms.

If the ISO still has room, including the known screen shots and cabs would be a bonus. I can ftp or something to you if desired. I believe that they have no legal issues like the roms do.

Cesman & Dale,
Let me began by saying thanks for all of your hard work. MythTV is by far the best solution for all of my home entertainment needs and in turn KnopMyth makes things simple.

1:
I'd like to see a nice boot screen added to R5.
I think the addition of the boot screen would be beneficial because it will cover up the ugly mess (when on a TV) that we call kernel messages. It will also make it seem more like a real PVR/DVR.
I will be happy to provide the (nice) boot screen. I was thinking it could also have a progress bar.

2:
I'd like to see AMD64 compatibility added to R5.
I think the addition of AMD64 compatibility would be beneficial because it would allow those with AMD64 processors to take full advantage of their hardware.
I would be happy to get more involved in the project if need be.

3:
I'd like to see an IRC Client Plug-in added to R5.
I think the addition of an IRC Client would be beneficial because it would allow people to communicate while watching their favorite shows on the couch.
I know there are many IRC Clients that would work, the easiest to use may be BitchX. Of course we want to keep the UI consistent.

Cesman or Dale feel free to contact me. I will provide my personal contact number. I have many other ideas I would like to discuss.

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm still getting into KnopMyth, but here are my suggestions based on what I've done thus far.

-At the beginning of the install, KnopMyth asks for date, time and timezone. However, since the installer is running off of a CD, any changes made do not take effect. The same dialog runs again when KnopMyth is installed to the hard disk, and then it works properly. This is rather confusing, and I would say that the date/time dialog should only run off of a hard disk.

-Remove modeline entries from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. AFAIK, they're not necessary, since modes are calculated when X starts. I removed them from mine after trying for a while in vain to calculate modelines manually so that my TV would display at 640x480.

-Include s3switch in the default install. This allows users with s3 video cards to choose a video output (CRT, LCD, TV). it's available in debian's unstable and testing repositories, and probably stable, no external dependencies.

I don't know if this is a suggestion for r5 or just a general suggestion, but what about an FAQ? In addition to the KnoppMyth Documentation, you can take all the popular questions asked on this forum and put them (and the answers) in an FAQ section. Questions like, "How do I setup my remote?", "My DVD won't play", and so forth would all be in one location that people could read through. You could also have a list of all the hardware that is supported out of the box (e.g. the grey hauppage remote), and which hardware may require some tweaking (the black remote).

Another thing I'd like to see (although this is more of a MythTV Question than a KnoppMyth question), is more information about MythGames. What kind of games does it support? Where do I get the roms from? Do I need anything else besides the roms to get it to run?

I got another suggestion: add FLAC support for ripping CD's, and support for playing FLAC files. When I looked into the CD import options, I was very dismayed to see that FLAC wasn't an option.

FLAC lets you make perfect, lossless copies of CDs, which are better for converting into OGG, MP3, whatever, than ripping to MP3 and then trying to convert lossy formats.

FLAC is also in mainstream debian, and depends on liboggflac1

Thanks!

Here's one I haven't seen yet, how about create a source that can automatically pull updates using apt-get for upgrades or perhaps new versions?

Here's a second vote for support of the Epia Nehemiah and related chipset, decoder, etc.... The binary driver from Via is not available for Debian, so is this even possible?

Couple of minor comments:

1. NTP didn't start automatically. Had to edit the config file to put a server in. May want to prompt or offer a default. More of an NTP package issues. Not sure if it is resolveable.

2. Auto support for PVR-350 tv out. I need to change my rates before I connect to a TV or I might damage the TV. When I change the rates, I lose the PC monitor output. (old equipement). Not sure how I will proceed prior to R5.

3. Auto support for multiple tuner cards. If it's already there, I apologize.

4. After install, I made the mistake of running mythfilldatabase as root. The cron script su's to mythtv before running. Just had to copy the file to ~mythtv. My mistake. Is there a way to report errors to user?

5. There is a particularly robust lircrc file at:

http://pvrhw.goldfish.org/tiki-page.php ... =rh9pvr250

6. Samba auto configuration to export mythtv file directory

I hope I didn't repeat too many other feature requests. Very nice job in R4! Can't wait for R5.

Odd I don't know why ntp didn't start automatically for you, but mine did. My shows were starting about 5 min off, so I changed the clock and then low and behold it changed itself back. So I ended up having to go turn ntp off.
