Well, it seems Linux Journal's Editor in Linux thinks "KnoppMyth is almost impossible to install, and it doesn't work when I get it installed." Frankly, I think he is wrong. If you agree, please drop him an email (ljeditor@ssc.com) stating your success with installing and running KnoppMyth. Please don't flame the man (I plan on doing this myself), just let him know how easy (or not (KnoppMyth may not be perfect, but I don't think it is difficult to install)) it was for you to get a PVR running with KnoppMyth and how easy it is to use once you got it installed.

What's the link to the article so can quote his points? Frankly a lot of business class workstation hardware has passed though my IT hands and I give KM install a shot on a lot of that hardware including cutting edge machines to old clunkers and KM support is good. I cannot say the same for other distros I enjoy such as Unbuntu, Puppylinux, and GeeXboX.

The above qoute is exactly what he saided. The article is titled "MythTV goes Amiss:Did MythTV get its name because the ability to install it easily is a myth?". Which in interesting as he doesn't ever talk about how he eventually installed MythTV on Ubuntu.... He rants about the buggy BIOS on the motherboard which he knew was problematic. Then he states he used another motherboard, yet doesn't even which motherboard he uses.

That's too bad. FWIW, this windows user (me) found it very easy to get going when following the KRP, and doing some reading here first. And each revision keeps getting better and better.

Now I'm wondering if old Nick has been frequenting the forums...

While I'm constantly amazed by the low-spec and bleeding edge boxes that people manage to get this stuff running on, anybody who isn't actively looking for trouble ought to realize that things will go far better if they stick to mainstream hardware. A board with known BIOS problems is way out there...

nick always seems to be wound up about something. I get the feeling that he is just bitter.. wouldn't blame it on KMyth. Read some of his past rants, the dude needs to take a vacation.

Perhaps your frustration came from the components you selected. I chose my components after careful study of which products were known to work well together. Even then, I wound up replacing a couple of pieces because they didn't "play well with others."

KnoppMyth is an incredibly useful distro, and it deserves more respect than I think it got in your piece. Don't knock KnoppMyth because of weird or poorly-supported hardware. Its strength is that it makes building a PVR easy work, if you're willing to use "mainstream" hardware that has decent Linux support.
