I recently changed video cards (Ti4600 to a fanless fx5200), and I thought things went well, but lately weirdness is happening.

I've randomly been unable to access the mythweb part (something with apache or mysql being down?), video playback on recordings is choppy (which it wasn't before), the xconfig file reverts sometimes....I dunno.

I'm new to the whole linux thing, so hacking around things has pretty much consisted of google and forum searches to try things.

Anyway, I think my current version is R5B7, and I see there's a newer one out. Can I reinstall the newer version without overwriting at least my MP3s, videos, and emu games I've copied over. I've been using the mythbox as a media server, and I'm not sure if I'd be able to copy everything back to something else....maybe archive off to DVD, but that'd be a hassle, too. I think I realize I wouldn't be able to maintain tv recordings (because of the database, right?), and that sucks but I guess I'll have to deal with it.

What are my options? Any other thoughts or ways I could see what's wrong with my system? Thanks!!

To augment Cecil's well-chosen half-dozen words...

KnoppMyth is designed to keep the operating system partition (/) separate from the data partition (/myth). This makes it possible to upgrade your system without losing your recordings and other data.

When you perform a "backup" on the KnoppMyth menu, it stores critical files from the OS partition in a special directory on the /myth partition. Then, when you perform the auto-upgrade your settings can be restored.

If you have done something weird or special to change the standard KnoppMyth partitioning scheme, you will need to adjust accordingly. But it sounds like you're using KnoppMyth OOTB (out of the box) so you should be fine.

Thank you both for all of the info! It makes sense, and yes, I didn't adjust the partitioning, so I'll go ahead and do the upgrade and see what happens. Thanks again!

Don't forget to read the upgrade hints before you start! http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11293

Hi,
Be sure NOT to change the hostname! Do an alt x to obtain an xterm then at $ cat /etc/hostname and make a note (pen & paper is good way) for later. Back up, and select auto upgrade. When the time comes for the hostname, refer to your notes :)

If you change the name, the restore works, however things don't match up and things are all funky. First clue is it will ask for your language... If the host name is wrong, you may manually edit /etc/hostname file then reboot and if things are right, it will be just like you never left the previous version.

Maybe tjc would consider it a worthy item to add to the backup/restore script?

Mike

What files to restore is a Cecil question. It's already backed up, so it would be painfully easy to add to you own custom restore.list or even the builtin one, but that's not my call to make.

BTW - Other than how to detect & fix a hostname botch, the rest of Mike's points (and much more) are covered in the hints posting mentioned above. Don't upgrade without it!

Alright, prior to reinstalling, I did some more digging, and apparently hda1 had run out of space, due to mysql.log taking up something like 2GB of space. I deleted that, disabled mysql logging, rebooted, and everything came up!....almost.

Under my recorded programs, I only have a bunch of episodes of two different shows, but I'm missing a ton of others. However, if I go to MythWeb, all of my recorded shows show up, and they're all in \mythtvtv\ . So, is there a way to get them back available from within the frontend?? Thanks!!

Aha! Nevermind....turns out the group filter was turned on somehow....I reset that to show everything, and all looks good now! Here's hoping the mysql log thing doesn't fill it up again!
