I've been searching for an answer to get my remote working. I have a Harmony 688 remote and it works well with my TV/stereo. I've programmed the 688 with the 'MythTV program settings' from Harmony and have not had success. The remote doesn't do anything.

Now I also have an IR PS2 keyboard that works great. I'm wondering if just 'teaching' my 688 from the keyboard might be the easiest way to get things working?

Now in seaching, I'm reading that I need to do something with the LIRC files? Do I need to install that or does it install automatically? Do I need to worry about this file if I just 'teach' my remote from the keyboard?

There is an article on the wiki that might help.
http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... ony_Remote

I'm hoping to try it out soon myself with a Harmony 525 and an old packard bell serial IR receiver.

I have a JP1 remote that I use with an IR PS2 mouse & keyboard receiver. I just made sure the correct keyboard presses were mapped to the correct buttons on the remote.
I don't use LIRC at all and the remote is far more responsive.

I created the Harmony WIKI entry back when I was using it for my PVR 350. I'm not using the PVR350's ir reciever anymore but I'm still using the hauppage codes and didn't make a change on my remote at all.

What you should do:

Buy yourself a serial IR reciever online, it shouldn't cost you more than 20 bucks. Maybe someone here can suggest a site. I built mine.

Plug it into COM1

As exampled by the WIKI instructions, load the Mythtv Knopp codes into the remote from logitech. The Mythtv Knopp codes are for the hauppage A415-HPG remote.

Edit your /etc/lirc/hardware.conf and change,

This: MODULES="lirc_dev lirc_i2c"

To This: MODULES="lirc_dev lirc_serial"

And just for good measure, add the following lines to the bottom of /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh

setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
modprobe lirc_serial
/usr/sbin/lircd

Then use this file as your /etc/lircd.conf

# Please make this file available to others

Thanks for all the tips. I've read the wiki and that helped me decide to purchase this remote as it had been working for others.

However I am currently trying to program the remote from the wireless keyboard. The 688 learned the keys great, but I'm having a problem with the remote as it seems to send too many 'repeated' signals at random. This makes it really hard to navagate. (And yes I've tried the 'repeat' to 0 and the inter-key and device delay tweaks.)

Secrets, you're on your own with the learning from the keyboard bit. I tried it as well, but I didn't get very far with it. If you do what I suggested above, you'll be happy.. ;-)

Can I try your suggestion with the PS2 IR receiver from the keyboard? The other problem I ran into (for me at least) was I didn't locate the "The Mythtv Knopp codes are for the hauppage A415-HPG remote". Maybe I can go back and check it again, I likely missed it at some point.

The codes are called "Myth Knopp" one the Harmony site. If you add a PVR to your remote and type in "myth" I beleive you will run across the codes. The PS2 IR receiever is designed for your keyboard only. It wont work with the myth knopp codes.. sorry..
