I've been running into this a little bit more frequently than I'd like. This is the third time this week, and over the past 3 weeks I'd say probably 5 or 6 times this has happened to me.

If I attempt to browse to my backend I get the "Main" screen with links to mythweb, avimanager, mythtv docs, etc. Clicking the MythWeb link would normally prompt for my user/pass and then dump me into the mythweb interface. I'm not getting that, instead, I'm getting a delay (maybe 20 seconds) and then the following:

Code:
Fatal Error at /usr/share/mythtv/mythweb/includes/mythbackend.php, line 162:

I'm able to SSH in and take a look at stuff, the problem is I'm not exactly sure what to take a look at.

I got a hold of a buddy who's more at home in the linux world, he said to "killall mythbackend" and then restart it, which seemed to work fine, but within 5 minutes I was in the same boat and I had a busted mythbackend again.

The backend log doesn't show any entry upon crash. This last crash happened at approx 11:47am, and here are the contents of my mythbackend.log as of 11:50am.

Code:
root@backend:/var/log/mysql# tail /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log

I am planning to make the jump to R5E50, but am waiting on a motherboard RMA return first..... anything I can do to hold this current install together in the mean time? The equipment in my sig is my current system setup. I'd me more than happy to provide any additional details that I'm failing to provide right now.

Thanks!

edit:At this point I have not yet rebooted the system, I don't have any recordings until this evening, so I've left it in it's crashed state as perhaps there are clues laying around that maybe get cleaned up during a reboot. By about 6pm CST I will need to reboot so that it catches our evening schedule of shows. Hopefully we can diggup some answers before then...... but if not, oh well.

When your problem occurs, is the mythbackend process still running?

I will take a look and see if it's still up next time this occurs, I know that simply running "mythbackend" is generally not enough to get things back on their feet. A "killall mythbackend" was needed last time.

Does doing a:
Code:
netstat -lnp

show entries similar to:

Code:

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 2790/mysqld
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6543 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3028/mythbackend
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6544 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3028/mythbackend
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6546 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 24370/mythfrontend

I'll give that a try as well, thanks for the ideas.

Is there anything interesting in /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log?

The mythbackend.log shows no activity at all unfortunately.

You generally don't want to run system daemons by hand except for debugging purposes. To restart the backend use:
Code:
/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart

This will take care of stopping any old process that hasn't died.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind as I wrestle through this problem.

I ran into this problem recently and it was because of an error in mythtv-setup. I have a separate backend and when I was re-installing it I made a mistake. Anyway, go into mythtv-setup and under the first screen in General make sure that the IP address for mythtv and the Master Server IP address is the same.

It seems that I have WAY too many cron's, etc. I don't know what is going on. Only thing odd that I noticed recently on the main interface was once it couldn't see that the backend was running when I went in to look at the program guide ... so I restarted and everything seemed okay. But now a few days later I try to access the web interface and no go.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce

Looks like you've got the known rrd CPU monitoring problem with certain motherboards. Check the R5F27 Hints which should cover this...
