I have been searching for the Liteon SHW-160PSS based on the fact that this is what is used on the Dragon and is mentioned as being 'super quiet'.

So far I have been unable to locate this at any of my local computer stores or on-line store.

The later models (LH-18A1P-185 and LH-20A1H-186) are available but I have read that these are great dvd writers except for the noise!

(I have read a number of such comments on the NCIX user forum)

Can someone please recommend a quiet DVD writer which I can use with my Myth box?

thanks,

Kevin

You might want to check out www.silentpcreview.com as they seem to be the experts on silent components. I believe their current standpoint on optical drives is that they are all quiet if you limit their speed. In windows you can use nero drivespeed to do that, not sure what the linux equivalent is. If you search their forums I'm sure you can come up with some recommendations though.

generally the faster the drive the louder it is, but that also depends on how well a manufacturer encloses the drive.

Plextor has a tool called PlexTools that let you control their drives max burn/read speed and a whole lot more. That's one way to go about making it quieter.

Also CDRinfo http://www.cdrinfo.com/
reviews quite a few drives, you could ask a reviewer or better yet check out their forums and ask which drive is the quietest.
Their forum is extensive.
