mpeg-4 decoding is totally different than mpeg-2 so the pvr-350 wouldn't help at all.

I have one board which is a Via KT-880 based and the PVR-500 is not compatible with that chipset. This is a known issue but there is nothing being done about it because that chipset is no longer in production. The PVR-500 works fine in my motherboard with the Nforce2 chipset.

I've been thinking about getting both a 350 and a 500 for my myth box. The box I'm going to use is my old Athlon 1.4 (asus a7n8x-e delux mb) and so probably has the processor power to encode one or two shows; however, I saw a post somewhere saying an Athlon 1.8 doesn't quite have enough power to encode 2 shows while decoding a recording. (now that I think about it, I am not sure if that was hardware assisted encoding or not).

Anyway, I got the feeling that the hardware decoder on the 350 would come in pretty handy if you were retooling your last desktop system.

BTW, Would the mpeg-2 decoder on the 350 get any use at all if you were playing back a mpeg-4 movie (was wondering if it might still take some of the burden off the CPU but really have no idea how "compatible" the two codecs are).

I tried my PVR-500 in an old Celeron 600 machine and it recorded 2 streams just fine. Playback was done on another machine.

The PVR-350 decoder only does MPEG-2 so it won't help much with the MPEG-4 for what I understand.

Just to clarify ... the WinTV-PVR-500 MCE is a hardware encoder right?
Whats the difference between the 500 and the WinTV-PVR-250 MCE which also has dual coax.

Guys please search for this info before posting. We must get this same type of question at least once a week and the answer is always the same.

Oh, and in case that's not clear, all of the 150, 250 and 350 cards only have a single tuner and encoder. The 500 has two.
