I have onboard sound and a soundblaster live soundcard.
I want the sound to come out of the soundblaster. Alsaconf allows me to change over to the soundblaster but this isnt permanent. I have to run alsaconf after every reboot.
How to I make the soundblaster the default card?

Can you disable the onboard sound in the bios? I can't remember if my machines let me do that or not. I know I can disable the serial/parallel ports though.

Yea, I've now disabled onboard sound. It hasnt automatically changed over to using the soundblaster. I still have to run alsaconf.

For some reason, the system is still thinking that the onboard one is the active one.

Thanks, its works now, although I am not sure exactly what i did to get it to work.

I thought I had fixed it but i hadnt. But i have now got it working.

EDIT:for some reason i now have to make mplayer use oss instead of alsa. VLC works with both alsa and oss

Based on budget limits, I also use older hardware On the Dell GX1 sound isn't happy either so I simply put a modprobe snd-cs4236 in the bottom of the ./etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh It seems to be fine on every boot / reboot.

You can obtain the driver required by reading the fine print when you run alsaconf.

I use 2 sound cards one onboard for 2 channel audio and another with optical out. I put options snd_intel8x0 index=1 in /etc/modpobe.d/intel8x0 (which I created) and it changed the priority/index/whatever. Good little hack for those with multiple sound cards me thinks. Hope this helps.
