Post subject: No Sound with R4V4

I did an auto-update to R4V4 from a working (except for zap2it issues) R4 (+ some manual updates) and everything seems to be working ok, except I don't get any sound from Live TV. MythMusic and MythVideo both have sound, so it appears the drivers are set up ok under linux.

With R4, I remember I had to edit Knoppmyth-Run to remove the xawtv command, but I don't see this as being executed in R4V4.

This is where is gets strange: I did test_ioctl -a, and saw that mute=1, which would appear to be the problem. So, I did test_ioctl -y mute=0, but I still couldn't get any sound from Live TV. I checked test_ioctl -a again, and mute=1 again. At one point, I kept repeating test_ioctl -a over and over and the mute setting would be 0 one time and 1 the next. I think I've narrowed it down to when the backend is capturing it seems to be messing with the setting. The volume in test_ioctl -a is around 60000, so I don't think that's a problem.

My set up is as follows:

Asus A7N8X-VM/400
Using onboard NVidia TV-Out through the composite jack on the bracket
Using onboard NVidia audio through the stereo output jack (no SPDIF)
2 x PVR-250 tuners capturing from RF Input

Myth is using /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer for audio output.
I tried various combinations of /dev/dsp, /dev/dsp0, /dev/dsp1 in the card configurations, with no luck (Is this even relevant to PVR-250's?)

I also tried putting "exec test_ioctl -y mute=0" in .fvwmrc

Anyone have any more ideas?

I would go ahead and do a full auto install instead of upgrade, but I'm afraid the full install will wipe out my /myth partition. I'd prefer not to wipe it out as I have a lot of CDs, pictures and some videos that I want to keep.
I don't mind losing the database or recorded shows.

You may want to try running 'alsamixer' and checking to make sure that the volume on your line in is not set to zero, and is set to capture (space toggles). I'm assuming your capture audio is going to line in. The volume defaults to zero on install.

That should fix the problem.

I also 'auto upgraded' from version 4.0 (to V4V4.1) and had the same problem with no sound from my PVR-250.

I think the problem was that I didn't have an ivtv version of the msp3400.o file. Recompiling the ivtv driver folder to get an ivtv version seems to have fixed my sound problem.

Here's what I did (as root):

Code:
cd /usr/src
# The ivtv compile needs the src files.
tar xvfj linux-2.4.25-chw.tar.bz2

cd /usr/local/lib/ivtv/driver
make clean
# I suppose I could have used 'make install' but I was testing
# and didn't want to add to my problems.
make

cp msp3400.o /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/media/video/
# And answer yes to overwrite the existing file.

# Then, if you don't like extra files just lying around:
cd /usr/src
rm -rfd linux-2.4.25-chw
# to delete the source files previously extracted.

Then reboot.

Thanks,

Rebuilding ivtv as described above did the trick. I've now got sound in my recordings and Live TV

I've got a picture with no sound problem on pvr-350 as well. I went through the procedure above, but it made no difference...

Update: Hey, it did work! I thought it didn't because I was trying to play back shows that were recorded before fixing it. Stuff I recorded before doesn't have sound but stuff recorded after does. I had thought this was a playback problem rather than a recording problem. Thanks!

Thanks Guys. I did a fresh install of Myth and had this same problem. This procedure worked for me as well. Fixed my No sound during TV issue.

Could someone explain what went wrong though?
Why did that file(msp3400.o) not get picked up during installation?

error reading from: /dev/video0
read: Input/Output error

but all i changed was the driver and the settings worked for the video before recompiling this so i dont know why its not working can anyone help ?
