Just read this news about the new 1.80 PS3 firmware...

"The new PS3 firmware will also allow users on a home network to seamlessly view and play images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, the company said."

I can imagine when the price comes down significantly that the PS3 will make a nice alternative frontend for playing recording and ripped movies from a KM backend. The fact that its a blu-ray player as well and will now upscale dvds to HD will make it a nice little (or medium) sized addition to my lounge room. Oh, I've heard its good for games too :)

KnoppMyth is automatically set to be a UPNP server, i.e. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/UPnP

In doing a little more research I find this tid bit contained in the linked wiki article:
Quote:
Sony PS3 - Firmware 1.80 added the ability to stream music, pictures and video from DLNA-compatible devices. At this point, it does not detect MythTV (v 0.20) as a streaming server. Apparently some SVN builds are detected and display files but other than MPEG2 (from PVR150 at least) files, no music or video will play.

goldenfri,

I would have thought that a combonation of MythPretty and Samba on your mythtv box would do the trick but after googling abit more, I don't think the PS3 can simply access a network share.

Apparently TwonkyVision (non-free) support the PS3 in their new beta version, so that might be an option. Hopefully someone will come up with a DLNA linux server soon.

BTW, Heres an article with some screenshots of the PS3 playing music. Apparently it uses 175 watts to do this!

It appears MediaTomb just added support for the PS3. I've never used it, but unlike Twonky, it's GPL.
