I did a fresh install of R5F1 on one machine. The front end is the back end. During the set where I had to enter the IP address I entered:
IP address for Mythtv: 127.0.0.1
Master server IP address: 192.168.0.103

Is this correct for a one machine setup?

I can access the machine from my XP machine with no troubles but cannot record a program. I bring up the menu, select a tv show and tell it to record that show but it does not get highlighted and upcoming recording is empty.

Unless you have multiple boxen (frontends) connecting to this backend, you should leave the IP addresses/machine names at the default.

Where exactly did you make these changes? In mythtv-setup, or in the Utilities/Setup menu?

Even if you don't have other boxes you should have both the addresses set to the IP address of the Master backend. If you don't have the box on a static IP set it to the loop back address of 127.0.0.1
