Could someone tell me what I have to do to get my DSL connection working with Knoppmyth? I am using the dsl directly from the dsl modem, not through a router.

Thanks.

You need to do two things..

netcardconfig and set it to use DHCP.. assuming your dsl modem does that.. if not.. Hard set the address..
you might after that need to unplug the dsl modem for 10 seconds and plug it back in, this will look for a new mac address hooked to it. thats all

actually if it is a dsl modem and not a dsl router it most likely will require ppoe, and there are a couple of different ways to do that, but I am not really familiar with them, as I have never had dsl.

why dont you go get a linksys router.. It will provide the firewall for your myth box... so you dont have to try and harden your Mythbox lol and give you nice PPOE options.. Good catch xsecrets. WIN WIN for ~36 dollars :)

Best advice of the day. If you do not have a hardware firewall/router between your KnoppMyth box and the outside world you really, REALLY, REALLY should. KnoppMyth is a great distro, but by default (for pretty good reasons) it has next to no security. While you can tighten it up, standard debian security patches often don't apply. Spend the $30-40 and save yourself a lot of grief.

I understand that I should put my knoppmyth box behind a firewall, and I will be doing this eventually when I go to school in the fall. Currently I am dual booting it with XP and I am just trying to get everything working on the box and test out its functionality. So are there any ideas besides GET A ROUTER to get knoppmyth to work with a DSL modem?

do some google searches on pppoe for linux. there are some command line programs to do this. they are probably not installed by default, but apt-get should get them. a quick look in aptitude shows pppoe and pppoeconf. those should help you out.

Perhaps if you'd have posted greater details perhaps you wouldn't have gotten that response, but it is good advice. In the past people have asked about including a firewall with KnoppMyth. I actually thought about it prior to the release of R4V3, but I didn't. KnoppMyth is based on Debian unstable. There are no security updates for unstable. So the advice of putting your set-top box behind a firewall/router is a good one.

well there are no security updates for unstable, because they are bleeding edge packages, so there is no need to backport the security fixes like they do for debian stable, but it's still a good idea to have a router.
