So, one month to go and no updates? Will Sep 1st, 2007 be the day that MythTV died in North America?

Multiple of the MythTV devs are working on a solution.

Cool. That's a good number in terms of percentage, but it doesn't reference a dollar amount. Someone may think, "Sure, I'll pay $2.00/month!" when it'd really be $5 or $7.50, and then their vote no longer counts.

I'm glad SchedulesDirect is taking the lead on it :) I hope it works out for the best.

I'm not going to ask when this is going to be ready - I know that it'll be ready when it is.

My question - if anyone cares to chime in - is this:

I'm currently using R5D1 and I'm loathe to upgrade, as everything is working perfectly. Should I stay with R5D1, anticipating that I'll be able to plug the new TV data grabber in directy, or should I upgrade to R5F1, assuming that the plugin will work best with this version, or should I stick tight and upgrade to R5F2 (?) as that'll have the new grabber routine baked in?

In short, I don't want to be configuring stuff at the last minute before the Fall shows start. I'll take my pain now to have a quicker resolution later, but I don't want to have to upgrade twice in the next month.

Any advice or hints would be appreciated.

Releases are tested for upgrades between adjacent versions, so while I have no inherent reason to suspect an upgrade from R5D1 to R5F*, upgrading from R5D1 to R5F1 to R5F* is the safer upgrade path.

That sounds logical -- I guess. Thanks.

I hate upgrading. If I remember correctly, though, my last upgrade went quite smoothly, following my move to the Dragon-clone. Perhaps I'll just cross my fingers and see if it doesn't work perfectly again.

Upgrades are easy if you take decent notes and do a bit of prep work.

As soon as the current recording finishes at 2100 I'll be doing one for testing purposes myself. The backup will take about 15 minutes (since I also sync my /myth partition to another drive for safety - this is testing after all), the upgrade itself another 15-20, and I'll be up and testing again by ~2130 or so. If I find problems reverting just takes another 15-20 minutes, and it'll be back like it was before 2200...

You're obviously way, way more organized than I. I've taken notes during install a couple of times ... I just can never find the notes the next time I go to upgrade.

My MythTV maintenance schedule follows the "whatever won't make the wife unhappy" schedule. It's now summer, and I don't think she's touched it in like a month and a half. My window for fiddling is about four weeks longer. I pray that the listing data issue is resolved before the fall season starts.

Actually, if I remember right, upgrading the past few times hasn't been too bad - but what comes after takes a while: installing all of the "helper" apps I keep on my box.

Ever heard of anyone succesfully installing Knoppmyth with "testing" and "production" partitions? Install upgrade to "testing" and check it out. If it works, move it to production. If not, just reboot to "testing." That would take a lot of the pain out of the backup/restore process - you'd always have a live copy of your complete production server right there on the disk.

I guess I'm most excited about seeing an active solution under way (schedulesdirect). My myth box crapped out about a month ago and I put things on hold since I was unsure where the listings were going. Now that I have a feeling that things will be better I can get back to rebuilding the box. I may even spring for some new equipment to celebrate a new version of knoppmyth (I'm sure one will be out around that time) and the new listing source.

I have no reference handy, but I know there have been discussions along those lines. The trick would be to outline all the failure scenarios and how to avoid them, then automate such a setup in the installer.

Schedulesdirect....not much info at their site. Tic-toc...

I'm guessing there will be a service interruption for us NA KnoppMyth guys. I'd love to be mistaken, but at this late hour with no more info on their site it doesn't leave me feeling very comfortable.

Oh well, I'll opt for the cable company DVR for a few months since it's cheap. That should give me a chance to rebuild the box since I'm using an ancient version of KnoppMyth. My wife pretty much owns the box so I don't mess with it :) See, there is a brighter side to this...

Interesting....

Hope the legal works out.....
see http://www.nabble.com/Zap2It-useless-due-to-data--t4217419.html

a snippit:
"A number of open source project leaders including myself have formed http://schedulesdirect.org to replace Zap2IT Labs. Sorry I can't provide any details yet, the contracts are still with the lawyers. I can say that coding has begun and I've already been able to download listings using the new method.

Robert"
