I'm finding that my usb remote often stops working , and when it dose I'll get the following in the dmesg

Code:
hub 1-0:1.0: port 2 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 5
usb 1-2: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6
hiddev96: USB HID v1.10 Device [DVICO DVICO USB HID Remocon V1.00] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-2

I can stop/start lircd but it will not come back to life untill a reboot.

I have a backend with 2 dvico tuners in it, so I have two remotes, one on the backend and one on a separate frontend. I have had problems with remote stopping working on the separate frontend, but not the backend. When it stops working, something is chewing up 99.9% of the CPU. I usually reboot using the power switch because the box is so unresponsive. Does your CPU go crazy when the remote stops working?

Did you ever have any luck resolving this issue? I see it occasionally on both my diskless frontend and my backend (contrary to what I said before).

You do realise that after restarting lirc as root:
Code:
/etc/init.d/lirc restart
you need to restart irxevent as mythtv in a terminal with a valid xwindows DISPLAY environment variable? (i.e Alt-X to get a terminal and then):
Code:
launch_irx.sh
I have never had to reboot to get the remote working again.

I think this is related to a bug in the USB code. I'm having the same problem with a smartcard reader. I can see quite a few posts here in this forum related to USB problems with keyboards and remotes that may come from this bug.

I've been told that it's related to the USB code and it's solved in kernel 2.6.19. Maybee I'll try a kernel upgrade (not really sure what it involves).

regards
hakan

I was browsing the lirc sources and I saw mention of a change to re-open the device if a read to the device fails. I wonder if that change is in the version that ships with knoppmyth, and if it is not, whether it would be a good workaround for the issue.

(source: http://lirc.cvs.sourceforge.net/lirc/li ... c?view=log revision 5.70)

Edit: Doing some more research, and it the information that cesman gave me a while ago about the sources for the knoppmyth version of lirc are correct (http://www.blushingpenguin.com/mark/lmi ... 50.tar.bz2), then it would appear that the lircd.c file in knoppmyth is revision 5.68. So perhaps this is a potential solution.

I tried compiling and using lirc 0.8.2 (from lircd.org) and it has a fix in it that prevents the USB disconnect causing a problem. I was able to unplug my USB dongle and then plug it back in and lirc continued to work without issue.

I'll work with cesman to see if we can get this into the next KnoppMyth release.
