newbie . greenhorn..... pretty much sums me up, but Knopmyth is great - however I can not find any documentation... can some one help me please ?

I have the latest version of knopmyth (and tried two previous versions) but I can not get the tv2000xp deluxe to work.. I have scanned these forums and make changes to bttv, bttv0, user and run the update-modules. yet the card is still not recognised properly, although I can see it identified as the machine starts up as bt878, but myth still can't see it. I have tried instlling this on three different compaq machines, pII, PII and PIV.

Also can someone tell me the hot key to break into the startup routive before the services have all started ( is it cntrl z ?) - at them moment I just bash the keyboard until i get a promt, and this works remarkably well.

any assistance would be appreciated thanks

not really sure what type of documentation you are looking for. there is installation documentation both on the main knoppmyth site, and on the knoppmythwiki.

so how do you know the card is not properly recognized? does it not give you any options when you go to define a card during the mythtv-setup? We really need more information, about what you've done, and what is not happening.

That's correct it does it not give you any options when you go to define a card during the mythtv-setup. I have made changes to bttv, bttv0 as per other posts without success. I assume the error about ipaddress is becuase the card can not be found ??

I would love to help out with Wiki......

can you tell me how to break into the startup routine, Also how to manually kick off the myth-setup process after making changes ,, is this just update-modules ????

well the ip address should have absolutely nothing to do with the tvcard. I'm not sure how to break into the startup, but you can view the information using the dmesg command. to start the mythtv setup manually you run mythtv-setup from an xterm.

probably at this point you need to look at the dmesg output and see if there are any errors when the bttv module loads. also you should make sure exactly which card you have. the 2000 delux uses bttv, but they have another one I think it's called 2000 expert that uses a different driver.

Thanks for the clarfication,,,,
1) on startup in bright green knoppmyth found brooktree bt878... sounds good, like it has been identified

Now, from xterm - dmesg indicates
bttv : driver version 0.9.15
bttv: Bt8xx card found (0)
.....
bttv0: bt878 (rev 17) at 5:09, irq:10, latency:66, mmio: Oxfc901000
bttv0: susbsystem: 107d:6609 (unknown)
please email ......
bttv0: using leadtek winfast 2000 / winfast 2000 xp {card=34, insmod option]
bttv0 :gpio: en=000000000; out=00000000; in=003ffffffff [init]
i2c-core.o: adapterbt878
bttv0: using tuner=2
....
tuner type set to philips by bt878

2) when exiting from myth frontend it get an error "could not connect to the master backend server - is it running ? Is the ip address for it in the setup program correct ?"
Welll now, I really don't know if it is correct but I sure don't know how to find or startup the setup program. I have done searches in google and in this forum for this error message without success ????????????????

well the can't connect to master backend is not related to the tvcard in any way other than you may not have finished setup and started the backend.

If you are just using one box I suggest not touching any of the ip's in the setup. this leaves everything at localhost, and will work even if your network card doesn't come up.

if everything is ok with the tvcard you should see something like this in dmesg.

bttv0: registered device video0
bttv0: registered device vbi0
bttv0: registered device radio0

Chris, I have used this card with KnoppMyth V4R4.

It sounds like the backend is not starting up. A likely cause is that the backend may not be running because there is no capture card defined. Try this:

1) Exit from the frontend (Escape, Yes)
2) Start an xterm (first item in the left mouse button menu)
3) Type mythbackend

Does it give a message about not having a card? If so:

1) Type mythtv-setup and enter twice
2) Go into the capture card menu. Are any cards listed? If not, create a V4L card. If so, edit (down-arrow, enter) and check it is a V4L card.
3) Go into the video source menu. Is a video source defined?
4) Go into the input connections menu. Is the capture card connected to your video source?
5) Go into the channel editor menu. Are your local channels listed?

that we a really great description from nigel and Co so I'll cut and paste it iinto my newbie's guide that I am writing for Wiki...

Following on I have done a complete install with the latest version of knoppmyth, but can't get the channel information.. I flick back to the terminal windows says - can't open socket, connection refused... I have tried pinging www.hotmail.com. and this works which means I have internet access.

Is this a file security issue that it can't open a file to download ?

How can I test downloading from the default website.. I have tried to install a browser with apt-get update apt-get update install mozilla so that could download something from the web-browser - but this command gives an error of "update command takes no arguments " ??

Any idea's ?

Also, to download files you don't have to install a web browser... you can use wget (which is also already installed) once you have the URL of the file you want to download.

just so you know the way to install new programs is
apt-get update
apt-get install programname

there is a difference in that and what you did.

Thanks for those details , I have just worked out the I needed to use root access and after a few attempts of "login root" that didn't work I found
su - which works great and now the updates do as well

I now discover that tv_grab_au--debug show me that mythtv is retrieving the channel information, but somehow the stations don't appear in the myth front end.. I am starting a complete re-installed to fix this hopefully.

I have found in one of the forums a list of all the stations details for my area, can anyone help me with loading this in manually ie file location for details and contents :-
insert "channel" .......................

this process would make a great addendum to my wiki document that is now four pages long...
