It pains me to ask, because i feel like its a stupid question, however i was wanting to recompile lirc for i homebrew IR receiver. I (as some of you know) am a linux newbie. I have compiled several programs on the knoppmyth box, however i dont know howto recompile a program (specificly lirc) is the lirc source somewhere in the knoppmyth dist? do i just goto the source

1)./configure (if there is one)
2) make
3) make install

is that the jist?? or do i have to remove the old lirc first?? so it biols down to two questions, assuming im basicly right on the method above. where does knoppmyth keeps its source? and do i have to remove whatever im compiling first / how do i remove?

thanks
andy

ok. thanks.. :)

i found "mythtv-i686-lirc_0.15.1-1_i386.deb" a couple questions.. do i have to remove the current package and then install? whats tripping me up is that i read the directions for compiling from source you must run the setup.sh and tell it that you have the homebrew IR (or whatever IR you have) Im not sure with the deb packages??? does it allow you to set those options?

The default mythtv package is called mythtv-lirc, it has lirc support compiled already so you don't have to remove it. Just recompile lirc.

thanks cesman.. I beg all or your indulgence yet again  I dont know where the source is for lirc so i can recompile... /usr/src has lots of stuff in it. most of which are dep packages. Im not that great at linux terminology yet but i dont think installing a .deb is concidered compiling.. Should i just download the newest version of lirc and compile that??

your humble groveling servent... :)

i need a bit more help on this stuff.
i followed the instuctions in the mythtv install guide for setting up a IRBlaster. Found i had to modify their code to make it untar and use the LIRC 0.7.0 code inclued in the knoppix version. Fine. done. but when i run the make command after setting it up i get this:

Code:
root@Singularity:/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4# make
make  all-recursive
make[1]: Entering directory `/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4'
Making all in drivers
make[2]: Entering directory `/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4/drivers'
Making all in lirc_dev
make[3]: Entering directory `/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4/drivers/lirc_dev'
mv Makefile Makefile.automake
cp ../Makefile.kernel Makefile
make -C /usr/src/linux/ SUBDIRS=/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4/drivers/lirc_dev modules \
        KBUILD_VERBOSE=1
make[4]: Entering directory `/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.25-chw'
Makefile:260: arch/i386/Makefile: No such file or directory
Makefile:543: Rules.make: No such file or directory
make[4]: *** No rule to make target `Rules.make'.  Stop.
make[4]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.25-chw'
make[3]: *** [lirc_dev.o] Error 2
make[3]: Leaving directory `/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4/drivers/lirc_dev'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4/drivers'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4'
make: *** [all] Error 2
root@Singularity:/myth/lirc/lirc-0.7.0pre4#

can any of you kind linux gurus give me the heads up on what i am doing wrong?

another thing : will this mess up my control of the Myth Box via my Happauge remote? I know that lirc controls both the in and the out but i did not see how to do that during setup.

all i want to do is use my happauge remote to control the MythBox and have the myth box control my cable box via IRBlaster. If there are directions for doing this i couldn't find them through the search feature. i found lots of links to code for C and Python. but i know less about them than i do about linux. and that is not saying much.

you can lead a person to knowledge but you cant make them think.
"Starship Troopers" the book not the movie

If you haven't gotten it working yet, use the kernel source instead of the headers.
