I'm at my wits end.

After my 4th try to install Knoppmyth, the NVIDIA splash screen shows up beautifully, then disappears to an 'X' shaped cursor, then the desktop (and even MythTV screens) offsets to the left and it's all jumbled up and appear to be in very low resolution.

I searched the forum and had all 4 or 5 topics discussing rebuilding kernel, merging stuff, unloading NVIDIA drivers, downloading the 41MB new driver, running an install, etc.

I'm a moderate newbie and following them as best I could, I couldn't get much of any of these instructions to work. Not to mention I was trying to go back and forth between all the posts. It's kind of a mess (no offense intended)

Can someone who knows what they're doing PLEASE put the instructions in a digestible format in one source? Also, the KnoppMyth Wiki lists an older version of the NDIVIA driver than the one in these other threads. Which one to use?

I'm trying to go out to my CRT tv via s-video from my NVIDIA 6200 LE
I run a Hauppauge PVR-150 for my input
I'm using a mobo with a via chipset but it's not in the list of affected boards. I've had perfect captures under fedora 6, but I heard Knoppmyth was supposed to be easier to deal with on a daily basis.

If I could just get this dang NVIDIA to load, everything would be perfect. I can see live tv and everything but it is just as jumbled as it can be due to there is no driver for it.

Any assistance is appreciated.
My wife's about ready to kill me.

LCD TVs are generally very finicky about exact sync rates. You may want to search for mode lines tailored for that, and make sure you're not trying to run at a resolution it won't support. Also check your X logfile and see if what it's trying to use. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CheckingLogFiles

Thank you.
I went to the link (and their links) and have gotten a pretty good handle on things.

I have created an xsession using my Win XP laptop, Putty, and XMing to see that my Hauppauge PVR-150 is recording video beautifully. (I can see the previews when I log into my Linux box via my XP X session.) That makes it all the more frustrating. I'm one step away and it's a doozie.

Ok. So I typed "more /var/log/Xorg.0.log" to check my X session logs.
It is large and I can't find a way to copy the output using Putty.
Anyway, the brief synopsis is:
It classifies the GeForce 6200 LE correctly as NV44. I've read where it -could- be a NV44A or something but I don't know.

I don't know what to do with the log.
There's a whole lot more info if I could figure how to copy it and paste it.

It seems KnoppMyth is classifying my video card somewhat correctly.
Item #: E145-5182 at tigerdirect.com. I bought it at newegg but I don't have the invoice in front of me.

FWIW, I'm sending VGA out to an actual 17" LCD monitor until I can get the s-video out to work on my Sony TV.
The bitmappy problems on the display are not at all similar to when I have wrong refresh rates or incorrect resolution. I can see the terminal text perfectly. It's the backgrounds, pictures, and video that look like crap.

I have confirmed via the method mentioned at the beginning that the capture is actually good.

I also have an s-video out to a big Sony CRT -- that output is always black when KnoppMyth starts up. It works fine on the bootup, though.

I've come too far to give up, but I don't seem to have the brains to do this last step by myself. I don't want to go back to Fedora but the tuner and video cards worked pretty good there (except the s-video output to the CRT). I really prefer KnoppMyth if I can get it running.

What would be my next step? I've heard of stopping the X window to make changes but I read where it constantly re-seeds and it's impossible to stop it.

If you have remote access to the box, you can make the changes that way and then just restart the X server.

The things you should be looking for in the X log files are more along the lines of detected attached displays (the EDID/DDC probing results). The idea is to see if it detects the monitor correctly and gets the right resolution and timing information.

I have attached the log files for the NVIDIA install, and the Xorg.0.log. Hopefully it will make sense to someone.

In the mean time, I have again followed the instructions to try to load the 8762 nvidia driver prior to launching x-window.
I log in as init 3 and x-window starts up.
I can only log in as init 1 for the terminal window to work (or simply hit the left-shift button and launch from LILO prompt.

Anyway, it doesn't matter since I'm unable to do anything since I get a "no precompiled kernel" error. The nvidia installer tries to find a kernel but it just doesn't work.

I'm in nothing but a perpetual goose chase with this.
All this was done from a fresh install of KnoppMyth off the CD.
I feel like I'm so close to getting this working.
The darn NVIDIA cards were supposed to be "just working" --- that's what everyone said during my research. (shoulda known, though)

Here is the NVIDIA log output:

I'd submit it as a text file but I can't figure how to link to my ftp site so you can download it.

You're confusing things by plugging in two screens. You either need to reduce this to one or go to a twinview setup. I suggested the simpler single monitor solution.

BTW - We really didn't need all of the X log output, the PCI details are almost totally irrelevant in this case.

Thanks for the suggestion
The background and video show no improvement.

For the time being, I'm done with KnoppMyth.
It's been a terrible disappointment for me.
I'm just not experienced enough with Linux to get it working, I guess.
I acknowledge that.

When we can burn a DVD to create KnoppMyth I'll come back and give it another shot.

Till then....
I'm going back to Fedora.
I can't believe it, but it's easier to work with MythTv for me.
I actually has all the tools available (even though it's on 5 CDs)

Thanks for your time and information. I sincerely appreciate it.
